The Most Searched Law Firms - Standing Out in Glut of Thought Leadership and Clever Attention-Seekers
DLA Piper, Jones Day, Kirkland & Ellis, Latham, Orrick, Paul, Weiss, Perkins Coie, Sidley and Skadden. In a study of 200 law firms BTI Consulting found those nine as the most searched in 2025.
Usually there are multiple reasons for this high visibility. For example, both Paul, Weiss and Skadden had their share of controversial headlines because of dealmaking with the Trump administration. But they also generated outstanding financial performance from assignments with high-profile clients.
That intense attention can be both bad (think of Skadden featured negatively on "60 Minutes," which had been influential pre-Bari Weiss) and good (think that prospects for new business know that Paul, Weiss isn't at war with the administration, whose cooperation can be key in transactional practices).
But amid the global competitive market for dominant branding and actual business, not achieving visibility is a major risk. You are not in the minds of prospective clients, star talent and the media/influencers.
BTI provides tips on how to ramp up attention:
Unique thought leadership. There's a glut of what is put out there as "thought leadership." You have to do much better than that. And you have to provide answers, not simply presentation of an issue.
Land high-profile clients. Well-known is that Apollo, so often in the news, has been a long-term Paul, Weiss client.
Special events. Post-Covid people like getting together in person. Also they value being seen. The trick is to lure media and influencers to feature those activities.
Early bylined postings. You want to be out there as a first on an issue and not anonymous. It's even okay to sacrifice being comprehensive. Search gives preference to that approach.
Headlining. One client contacts a partner about a developing issue. Assume others are also concerned. Leverage that as opportunity for a lot of attention. Yes, it's a use it or lose it situation. Move rapidly.
