Food, Glorious Food, Mostly Free - But Some Balk at Paul, Weiss

It's become a necessary perk at elite law firms, especially with RTO. Both here in the US and England. That is, gourmet food. Not just snacks but actual meals. Totally or mostly free.

However, that horn of plenty isn't without complainers, reports Brit legal tabloid RollonFriday. For example:

" ... a Paul, Weiss staffer was clearly not that fussed about their five-a-day: 'Why is everything so healthy? Why isn’t there butter for toast in the morning, or some normal food at lunch'".

That healthy fare could be a result of the chair Brad Karp's heart attack in January 2025. After such a traumatic medical event there could be a psychic shift to the mission of protecting the rest of the world's arteries from clogging up.

Post my April 2024 stroke for a while I only served healthy in my home. That ended when guests at my place for the SuperBowl seemed not-into-it. My boyfriend did an emergency junk food run and ruckus filled the room. Not a Dorito was left over. The radishes, cukes and celery wound up rotting in the fridge.

Also at Paul, Weiss, Karp himself reported in a BusinessInsider interview there was complaining that there was a charge for soda. That was several years ago. Since then the law firm might have enacted course correction on this weighty matter.

The grousing I hear from young lawyers who I coach is that the availability of so much food has been a factor in the "Associate 20." That is, the pounds they packed on since joining the Am Law 50.

I know from my days in the old Weight Watchers there's a tendency to confuse fatigue with hunger. Also you can attempt to cope with being bone tired from work by stuffing down comfort food.

Given that you can't please everyone through the food perk it might be smart business sense to provide an option: So much extra money in the paycheck for opting out of the access to free food.

Confidential tips welcome.
