Antisemitism: We Haven't Figured This One Out
The very founding of Paul, Weiss represented a stand against antisemitism. To today, the law firm is in the front lines of opposing this horrific form of bias. In that it has bonds with the Trump administration which has a mission of combating antisemitism in higher education.
But, what's obvious is that societies haven't figured this one out. We don't know how to prevent it. History also demonstrates that harsh penalities can drive it underground, intensifying the determination of the haters.
The scope of discrimination and acts of violence are increasing. In America more of Jewish heritage have taken steps to mask that identity.
What might provide a way to understand that we don't understand the dynamicss the 1961 film "Judgment in Nuremberg." It is avalable on the free streaming platform Tubi.
Set in 1947, two years after WWII, it is a fictional version of the third of 12 trials of those associated with the Nazi regime. Overall, the world and especially Germany are weary of this attempt to determine accountability and impose penalties. In the process, Americans have come to be hated for conducting these tribunals which had resulted in severe penalites such as executions of those contending to have been unaware of what was going on in Germany.
In charge is Dan Haywood. Since he had lost the last election in America he's no longer a judge. That creates the question if this man is unskilled in sizing up politics. At the time, the Cold War has started and Haywood is informed that America needs the support of Germany. The nudge is to go easy.
Haywood follows his own moral compass and interpretation of the law. Profile in courage? Maybe just a reckless gesture. In the process he loses a personal friendship. Eventually those he sentenced sentenced to life in prison, as predicted, get out. So do 95 other defendants from other trials. Most nations wanted to get beyond the horrors of the Third Reich.
Because of all this ambiguity and heavy doses of geopolitcal realities, "Judgment" is difficult to take in. It might be useful viewing for those at Paul, Weiss, other law firms and law schools. It could create fresh perspectives on the why antisemitism has been so resistant to solutions.
